The cemetery, which was formally opened in 1868, is situated on 65 well-maintained acres. It has interred people of all faiths in graves or in private family mausoleum crypts. With the increasing trend toward cremation, the cemetery recently added a columbarium with 96 niches for cremation urns. The Cremation Garden includes an area to scatter ashes, with bronze plaque memorials listing the names of those for whom this option was selected. Marble benches surround The Garden and provide a tranquil setting for solitude and remembrance.
General John Hathorn (1749 - 1825), who played a significant role in the Revolutionary War, is buried at Warwick Cemetery. Hathorn became a Major General near the end of the War. After the Revolution and Independence, he became Speaker of the New York State Assembly, Warwick Town Supervisor, and served several terms in the U.S. Congress, representing our district.
